After Nixon put on wage and price controls, gas prices often ended with odd fractions of a cent other than 9/10. I still remember him on TV saying "Gas will never be a dollar a gallon and bread will never be a dollar a loaf." Oil companies couldn't make any money on gas at the government-regulated prices, so they just quit making gas.
