My old man (dad) always had a piece of old canvas wrapping the wheel spanners and such under the seat of the old Dodge that served many purposes. We lived in the ranges and he didn't like crawling under/around the truck on the wet ground when he was working on it, it stopped things rattling around, it could be used as a work bench cover on the flatbed if he had to work on a carb or a saw - he never had a winch on the truck or I'm sure he would have used it as you suggest as well. Thanks for that suggestion, makes sense.
