I was told by a friend who worked in the auto industry way back in the day that the motors were lubricated with vaseline.

My experience with old rubber is that it either is soft and pliable and will stay that way or it is dried and ready to crumble. The way those kits were made, the flapper was riveted between two pieces of steel. Those could be de-riveted and new rubber placed if you could figure out what kind to use. My guess would be fuel pump diaphragm- from what I could see of the flapper in the kits, the rubber was actually impregnated cloth.

And speaking of vaseline, old rubber, and impregnation, in the words of an old Navy Chief, "When stateside, use a fresh rubber, so she won't worry about the rabbit dying."
