Military multifuels actually have a very different injection system. They have deep pocket in the top of the piston and an injector shoots most of the fuel in a solid stream into that pocket, with only a small amount being atomized. This avoids the "blowtorch" effect of injecting gasoline into a conventional diesel engine. The atomized fuel ignites immediately, but he majority of it evaporates and burns slowly ("slowly" still being a small fraction of a second) out of that pocket. The injector pump is oil-lubricated so it doesn't depend on the lubricity of the fuel, and it has a "density compensator" that adjusts the timing based on the viscosity (so "density" is a bit of misnomer) of the fuel. Quite a few differences from a normal diesel engine. Part of the beauty of it is it does all that without any electronics. 1950s German technology.
