Did you check the Distributor . I had similar problems and could not figure out checked the end play at the rotor it felt ok not great but reasonable ended up taking it out had a friend with a generator shop check used to rebuild distributers and the distributer needed rebuilding it was amazing how little the amount of play in it caused the dwell to be off a great deal once it was running. Distributer was mechanical advance.
