When the engine is acting up, I always like to pull a spark plug wire off the spark plug while the engine is idling. Do them one at a time, then hook them back up and go to the next one. Just listen, there should be an obvious reduction in RPM, but more importantly, you will likely find the missing/popping sound might disappear when you "turn off" one particular cylinder, or two adjacent cylinders. These can indicate a bad valve, valve spring, head gasket, spark plug and other fixable stuff.
