Davey, I too have the old eyes thing going on, I put a vernier sight on my sharps and the hooded front sight, but where I depart from normal is I use a crosshair front insert in the sight. the eye will center itself in the rear aperture and then just use the crosshair in the front as you would a scope! I have shot groups as small as 1 7/8 in.(10 shots) with this set up @ 100yds. I am 66 yrs old. (tired eyes) Dave.
