Tapered roller bearing cones and cups are very suitable for the upper trunnion, I have used them for decades, they are also easier to adjust with shims and do not wear out unless improperly set up with excessive preload. If your upper trunnion covers (steering arm on left side) do not have grease zerks, drill, tap out the center and install zerks, the key is being able to keep fresh grease in the trunnions, (both solid or roller) I rebuild Oshkosh 18,000 & 22,000 lb front drive axles as well as light ruck axles and the tapered rollers seldom go bad and handle the weight and steering load with ease. The bronzr upper cone is what was thought the best at the time of manufacture, if you use the truck off road a lot they will dry out, then end up galling on the cup. That is why they wear out! Also bearings are better if you are running larger than stock tires! Inner axle seals are very necessary as they prevent the gear oil from contaminating / diluting the wheel bearings and knuckle grease. Also replace the felt wipers but do not sand, grind, or do anything other than clean the spindle cup! Lightly coat the outer cup with grease and soak felt in sae 80-90 wt gear oil for a couple days before installing, do not install felts dry! Other than that its an easy rebuild. Have fun!
