In getting my 1st M37 out of the snow (did it Mr. Lundstrom's way, and will deal with what's in the tank later) I noticed a few oddities I hadn't seen before. The manifold has no heat riser. When I look down in where the carburetor goes, there is a "disk" maybe 1-1/2" in diameter and 1/2" thick either cast into or attached to the intake manifold directly below the carb. In the passage below the carb, there is a sheet metal tube insert that's slitted up the fore and aft sides of it like a lady's slinky evening gown. It must be intended to distribute the mixture better somehow, but it seems like it would just restrict the flow. And lastly there's contraption attached to a pocket cast into the exhaust manifold near the #4/5 position that I'm assuming is a choke oven analogous to that on an slant 6. Nothing is connected to it, but I don't have the stock carb. I've never seen any of these "features" on any of my other flathead 6s. Any idea what they are? It's not a stock military engine.
