Was the grease going passed the rod back at you? If so drill or ream so it make a tight seal. Never had one not come out.

If someone pounded the pilot bushing all the way in that's another story because the greas can't get behind it. Is it flush to the crank?

You might try threading it and stack washers with a large hole to make a homemade puller. It's bronze though so it won't take too much pressure but normally they are not that hard to get to move.
