What signs of performance does a non working, or partially working, distributor vacumm advance demonstrate?

I ask because I am not sure mine working or not.

or perhaps one of you guys can point me to where else I should look.

rebuilding a 1941 dodge wc12.. just getting to a point where I can drive it to see how the brakes/clutch/steering etc work before I try and button up the front end.

In other words, working out the "kinks" and making adjustments while I got easy acccess to the engine bay.

drove it a bit last night to feel it out.

Heres the deal:

-Brand new rebuilt 218 engine
-Distributor, original with truck. condition really unknow accpt it LOOKS decent and clean inside.
-brand new points (gapped correct, I think)
-timing set properly (now)
vacuum advance module is on distro, and plumbed to the carb.
Carb is a brand new proffesional rebuild. vacuum port IS working. I can feel it "suck" when I raise the idle and put my finger over the port opening

heres what happens. truck startes easily and idles fine.

Driving it, under load, I get coughing and general bad engine running. let off gas, and return to idle and the engine idles fine.

I disconnected the vacuum line from the carb end and took for another run. she seemed to run better, but as it was getting dark, could go much further as I have no lights yet.

Isnt that weird? it working BETTER without the vaccum line attached? and the carb vaccuuum port OPEN to the world?

( i did noticve the truck idles better, without any stumbling, when the choke is partially out.. thats another thing I cant adjust "away")

Second.. I didnt replace the condensor, as it looked fairly new..

could this be a cuase of the poorly running engine as described?

My god.. having so many issues with this new truck.. they just keep coming... a brand new engine, new fuel pump, new fresh carb rebuilt, and new lines, new plug wires, points, etc.

Didnt replace cap.. humm.. arching happening due to a crack?

Didnt replace rotor (yet) as mine looked fine. possible place to point as an issue?

anyway, throwing out all I know, what I did and didnt do.. wondering what I missed and where yuo would look next to try and fix the issues. thanks.
