I don't mind going to low voltage, but it needs to be BRIGHT and very waterproof. Not "rain-proof" but "permanently immersed 10' down in a flooded mine shaft" proof. We have a pretty good marine bronze housing and after working on the seals a few years ago, the cord and the lens don't seem to leak. It also has to be heavy enough to sink rather than float. I think I want to stick with the housing, cord, and rope we have, and just put a longer-lasting bulb in it. As for safety, there's not much danger since any short is going to go straight into ground through all that water and it's not like any person is going to have their hand on it down there. I actually looked at a lot of swimming-pool type underwater lights a few years ago and couldn't find anything suitable. Not sure where this unit came out of but it's definitely old-school.
