This is a switching power supply rather than a rheostat. That means it chops up the current (the motor or light bulb averages it out) rather than using resistance to reduce the voltage. The end result is a constant voltage to the load, and very little heat generated in the device. It looks like it should mount behind the panel without taking up much room, just like a regular switch or rheostat. When I get it and try it, I'll let everyone know how well it works. So far I've been pretty impressed with the very low-priced electronic subassemblies that are showing up on ebay straight out of China. It looks like they're meant to be included in larger, packaged products most of the time, but some entrepreneurs are selling them straight to the public as well. Once you start looking around, they have all kinds of interesting stuff, mostly with free or cheap shipping.
