If you have a shift lever on the floor that should be the NV271 transfer case. That model has adjustable linkage to operate the gear selections.
The NV273 transfer has a dash mounted button selector switch and then has the electric shift motor.
It sounds like the floor shifter is not pulling the transfer completely into 4WD. You may only need to adjust the linkage.
