Around 1960, I rode with my dad and my grandmother from Laguna Beach, Ca., to Granite City, Il., on Route 66 without stopping except to buy gas and only to buy gas. We used the bathroom when we bought gas. To add to the enjoyment, we did it in August, likely the most miserable time of the year for that part of the country.
The trip home was a little farther north, through rain storms with lightning strikes that seemed to stop the windshield wipers momentarily, and semis blowing past us from the other direction, on a two lane highway.
What a blast. There actually was one high point to the trip...we went through the Ozarks and I remember 4 or 5 old guys with scruffy beards and missing teeth sitting on a bench at a little store where we bought gas. They were commenting on how much they liked my dad's De Soto.
