You've got to use a pcv valve in the intake hose. And it's got to go into the intake manifold, under the carb in a central place so that it won't all flow into one cylinder.PCV valves close under high vacuum (when you make the least blowby) and open under low vacuum, full throttle (when you make the most blowby). Try to find a pcv valve from a similar engine.

Re: crankcase explosions-
The only ones I've seen were caused by a carb backfire going into the crankcase via the filler vent side of the system when the hose from rocker cover to air filter entered inside of the air filter. Note that one of the tasks of the air filter is as a flame gaurd- the screen on the inside of a paper filter stops flames.
