In going through the engine in my '53, I found a thick cork gasket around the the distributor housing where it seats in the block. It was cracked and I've not been able to find a replacement. I used a fat O-ring but it still weeps a bit. You may find that the oil from your distributor base is blowing back around the dipstick tube.
