Problem with my 1974

I got something odd happening to my 1974 D200 with a 440. I have
been having some troubles lately with the temperature flucuating. I
then had the fan belt start to squeel constantly above 40 mph no
matter how tight it was it would squeel. So I thought maybe the
water pump was seizing up. Took belts off and spun the alternator
and it spun very free. Spun the water pump and had some
resistance but not bad. Spun the PowerSteering pump and it had
resistance also. So for 23$ I replace the water pump. It appears
good to me but I replaced it anyways. Now the temperature is
steady and the belt dont squeel no more. Has new belts also.
Roughed up pulleys with sand paper and have put belt dressing on.

Now something really bad is happening. Upon starting the engine
after its hot. it either spins over smooth and starts or it turns over
very hard and almost stops or makes a slight grind and starts. I
dont think its the starter grinding.

Does this at random but always when the engine is warmed up.

Now driving the other night going down the road at 30mph the 440
just stopped dead in its tracks and made this grind noise and the
belts started squeeling and then the 440 came back to life and ran
smoothly the rest of the way home. All lights and headlights
stayed on. It was like someone just stuck a big stick into the
engine for a split second.

I suspected a timing chain but if its jumping the 440 should start to
run bad and its not. Its running like a champ.

Could this be a flex plate/ TQ Convertor problem?

Could the powersteering pump be doing this? I dont suspect the
alternator as it spins very free. Any ideas out there?

The morning after the dead in its track incident I drove it for about 2
hours and it ran fine. Stopped at the gas station and filled up and
started the truck and as I got the seat belt on (yeah I know a 1974
lap belt wont do much good) and was about to put it into gear it
died. I cranked and cranked and cranked and nothing. Sat there
and said oh sh*t and turned the key one last time and it fired right
up. Got it home and popped the hood and looked things over and
all is well. It died again on me at home. I had the timing light on it
when it died and pulled the trigger as I cranked on it and it flashed
so I assume I had spark while it cranked. Then it started up after
some cranking and has been fine every since then. Could this be a
fuel pump causing a grind? What would make the belts squeel?!
Any ideas?

Todd
