I welded pieces into my lower tailgate hinges. Specifically the tabs with the pins had missing sections. I have been running the truck for 13 years and no problems with the hinges. They are cast but it is cast steel ont cast iron. Cast iron would be too brittle to use in the hinges. You should be fine.
