Mopar and some of the German manufactures use them. the fluid is different than belt drive systems and expensive.

could mount the electric pump anywhere and run hoses to the steering box.

There is also electric steering motor that powers the steering rack or is the rack.

The only issue I see for electric motor driven PS is most manufactures have steering, ABS, traction control all tied into the PCM. To separate the electric steering controls would be difficult.

It would need a module designed just for the application without inputs/outputs to other modules.
