Sounds like the trans was out and things aren't adjusted right.Usually if the cable is off, you won't see the square light appear around the "P" on the dash cluster. Had this happen There is an adjustment for the shift cable under the dash. It adjusts similar to a GM TV trans cable, there is a hole in the adjuster you stick a drill bit in to line things up. There was a recall on these trucks to add a buzzer if the shift lever isn't all the way in park. The 48RE uses a long rod that goes to the park pawl back near the overdrive. It's possible it was not installed correct, or replaced with the wrong one. If someone installed one from a 46 or 47RE it will slip as the head that engages the park pawl is too small compared to the 48RE rod. otherwise they're the same length. 47RE, .547 diameter head, 48RE .724 diameter.I'd call a dodge dealer and inquire about the availability of a 48RE park rod. This may be the mythical "redesigned part" on backorder and they just don't want to admit the wrong one's in there.
