I have only rebuilt earlier engines and none have a rope seal. I don't think the later ones do either. the groove you see is the oil slinger groove. the engines that have a rear main it bolts onto the back of the block in 2 halves. Some engines only have an oil slinger and no rear main. But I am pretty sure all the truck should engines have the seal. I have had a couple engines wth no rear main and the oil slinger works really well. even offroading never had any oil leak issues. Both would be best though. all engines should have the slinger IMO. you will never see these engines pouring oil out the back because of a failed seal.
