Hello all,
I was lurking here for the first time in a while and saw the discussion on overdrives.
It was good to see that Macs' truck is still going strong with it's od. Mac is one of my most enthusiastic supporters along with TCP and Dock Dave. Also good to see posts from Wayne and Greg, both of whom I've talked to.
Mac expressed concern about having enough power in od on steep or long hills. I had the same concern when I built my first unit, but my truck pulled surprisingly well. Also, the beauty of the Laycock od is it's cone clutches and internal oil pressure system, which allows disengagement under power, using a Spicer switch connected to the units' hydraulic solenoid.
As to the availability of new units, Gear Vendors is an option, and the best set-up, imo, is a stand alone unit. They should be a lot cheaper than one that has a tail shaft adapter and you don't have to buy their electronic package.
Concerning used Laycock units, Im sure if you just wanted one for yourself, you could find one as they were used on Volvos' in the 80s for a bunch of years. I just couldn't see me trying to continually round them up. If you go this route, you need to get the gearbox also, as the tail shaft of the gearbox is the input shaft of the od.
As Kaegi once blithely said, It's just a Volvo od with a block off plate.
The machine work is very simple and cheap. One key to the whole thing is to use M37 flange yokes that will bolt right to existing u joints.
I've been thinking of posting the whole thing on line - perhaps when I'm in Florida this winter. You can see pictures of the installation in Tom Petroffs' picture gallery (T134 I think). If anyone is considering building an od for themselves or multiple ones for resale, I'll be glad to answer any and all questions. Call me at 908 281 0432.
The question that started this last week was posted on Wednesday, 11/11, which was my birthday (I turned 73). It was also special to me because I served five years in Naval Aviation. Needless to say, I wanted to hoist a few with my honey, so we went "down the shore", as we say in New Jersey (Long Beach Island).

Best regards
Dennis
