trade nothing. mileage is the same. these engines are designed to go anywhere in the world and run on whatever gas is available. pre war fuel octane was in the 60 to 70 range. you can run a flathead with stock on coleman fuel if needed. Even Cars back in the 60s that would have very high compression engines like Buick nail heads and such offered a very low compression option for expert vehicles. By shaving head and better cam just bringing into to the modern fuel era and optimizing the engines capabilities. the later the flathead the higher the compression from the factory. As fuels got better they did compensate. just no enough. ;/)
