Get TM 9-1808C Ordnance Maint.-Power Train and Interchanges:Military/Civilian 1941-1971 from VPW. There is a chart in the booklet that lists all the gear sets that will interchange between various years of Dodge trucks. Some people say that Dodge had a 4.30 ratio gear set for the 9&5/8" third member, but I have never seen it listed in any Dodge parts book whether it be the truck parts book or the route van book. 4.30 ratio's could be found in all 1940-1953-54 1 ton 2x4 trucks. Note that the 40-42 third members had 2 pinion differentials and the 45to 53-45 had the stronger 4 pinion unit. These are the smaller 8&3/4" third members not the larger 9&5/8" third members.
I installed a set of these in my 1/2 ton WC-12 about 5 years ago. With the 900-16 NDT's in 4th gear, my final drive ratio is 4.94. Good speed on the freeway, 55-60@2400-2500 RPM', but a real dog on the hills with the 230 I have in it now. Installing a later 57 Plymouth head helped give it a little more pep but still, slow on moderate to steep hills.
