All good valid questions. Determined that the wire to the distributor ha voltage with a meter, actually 25 and change volts.
Put (several differant) spark plug onto assorted plug wires and hold the side of the plug onto a head bolt and watched for spark whils a friend cranked it over. Should see a spark snapping from the electrode and do not.
I heartily agree that most electrical problems come from a bad ground, but there is no seperate ground to the distributor. It seems that if there is enough of a ground for the startr to crank that the dist. would also be happy.
