Had that happen to a couple Chevys. Easy way to check them is you pull the dist cap and turn the engine by hand till you see the rotor move. Stop and watch real close and turn it the other way noting how far it goes till the rotor moves again. If it moves over 1/2" it is time to maybe replace the chain and gears as a set. It will still fire just run like crap unless it breaks.
