Bottom of the coil has a contact, no? to a disc that acts as an radio noise supressor. Those go bad, and short things. Or is it an open? Sub a wooden disc? With a nil through it?
Many external coils have a rfi condenser mounted to the side, hooked to the + side. It would be that equivalent. And the hot volts would have to flow though it to the coil etcc. I think.
