The reason there were no key cylinders on the driver's side was because during the forties,fifties and sixties it was actually against the law to enter or exit a vehicle from the traffic lane. It was for safety. There actually are a few states that still have the law although it is not enforced. We were taught that in driver's ed class (California) in the late '60s-early '70s.
