That is what I've always been told as well. When I was in high school and took metal shop out teacher told us to always remember the 4 C's are the most important for good welds, Cleanliness, Comfort, Consistency and Correct settings. Comfort meaning an easy path of flow for the weld pool. I normally dry one to check for obstructions and such.

That was all the training I ever got and from there it was just real world situations and practice. After a while you can spot weak spots, knowing where something is going to break. Even if a college educated kid with a degree says it specs out with his computer model.
