I was like Mark in that I wanted one but wasn't sure I could justify the cost for a decent one for the limited use I was probably going to have for it. So I kept an eye on the local craigslist and ended up being able to jump on an older (non-inverter) Miller 375 for about half their normal price. The torch is a little beat up but they still sell the model and the newer torches will connect and the consumables are cheaper than the one I have.

It's been more than enough for most of my work. I did sever some thick stuff (two 3/16" plates welded together) on the bed, and while it was messy and slow and had to be followed up with the grinder it was way easier than using any sort of cutting machine.

For cutting in certain locations, big areas, or cutting odd shapes it's great. Outside of that I tend to just grab some sort of mechanical cutter (body saw, cut-off wheel, etc.) so for the use I've had so far, I probably wouldn't have spent the money on a new one, but if you can find a decent used one for a decent price they are great to have.
