Tim, check this first, roll no. 1 up to TDC, check the harmonic balancer to make sure of the timing marks, they WILL slip on occasion and make you think that the timing is somwhere it's not!! are the valves ajusted too tight? what you describe is like when the valves have not been ajusted in a long time, and need it. and last and worst case is cam timing, the cam wouldn't have to be off over 8 or 9 degrees to do what you describe,less than a tooth on the timing, but enough to mess things up. Dave.
