I have to say I always hated to have to build a house from plans that were "checked" by a structural engineer. The exceptions were two houses we built on huge steel I Beams that cantilevered over some massive concrete walls that were drilled and pinned to solid rock.
But the ones that sat on relatively flat, undisturbed soil that we built for Calif. transplants who were worried about earthquakes were the problems. A lot of overkill on stuff that wasn't really all that big of a risk here.
