W didn't mean 4x4 until 1957.

When Dodge started selling factory 4x4s to the public they added X to the designation of the standard 1 ton model name of the year in question (WD) which created the WDX. I don't see how Dodge was calling a 4x4 a W in 1941 and then decided to call it an X in 1946. Especially when the model year was W and everything else started with a W in 1941 including the WKD diesel tractor.

Another example for my side is the 2wd military 1/2 ton trucks which were WC-36 and the like. 1/2 ton, 2wd, built in 1941 and1942.

This follows my theory of:

W = 1941-47
C = 1/2 ton

As I said before I accept that Dodge either carried over the WC designation when the 3/4 ton and 1 1/4 to were built or that the meaning of the designation changed, but it came from the standard model naming convention that Dodge was using in 1941.

In addition your idea of Carrier for C implies that everything was a "carrier", panels, cab chassis, radio equipped command cars, etc. it doesn't follow and I've never seen anything that leads me to accept that idea.

Eric
