I use a combination of straps and chains. I always use short chains with shackles on the ends over the axles. I put theses at each corner then use straps to attach to eyes on the trailer. I then use two additional chains, one front one rear, with binders that go between the axle and trailer. I never have had an issue and nothing ever loosens up.

I would never wrap straps around an axle. I always cross my straps and straps would pinch and be cut at the axle. You need to cross your tie downs to prevent left right movement of the vehicle. My straps cross at about 45 degrees. I wrap my chains around the axle next to the spring purches which stop the chains from slipping.

I would never use over the tire straps. Tow trucks use them but they only go short distances not 1000s of miles like I do.
