100 amps is not unusual in a starter motor. And it has to work against the momentum of the crankshaft. Yours is a constant load, limited by the pressure relief system.

House type fuses crossover to DC amps, I'd go with about 100a until you fry that. That's plenty of protection for your cables. My pick-up sized lift gate uses #10 wire from battery at the nose to motor at the tail.
