The inward flange gets locked on by the tire bead. Once the ring is properly snapped into place and the tire bead rises with just a couple PSI, it can't come apart. As opposed to the ones used on the 60s-70s pick ups and AA Ford 20" that lacked that inward flange.

That said, you still want a clip on air chuck and remote pressure gauge. I made the chuck on a 10' piece of hose with quick coupler, and a dial type gauge with female coupler to couple to it instead of the air source hose. Then I use either a heavy logging chain or mount it to my M101 trailer backwards when inflating. That's the GI method.
