With all due respect to the above posters, removing a split ring is not the problem providing you have the right tire irons and a tire hammer or bead breaker and tire soap. Installing the ring properly and airing it up is where you have to be very very careful. The rim and ring should be cleaned of any rust and dirt. Make absolutely sure the ring is seated properly in the groove of rim. I would m. Wrap heavy duty chain around the wheel assembly and secure with a bolt,nut washers. Air up the tire slowly and watch the ring to make sure it the ends come together. Let it sit there for a while. Then carefully remove the chain. I have used special wedge plates that fit over the center hole of the wheel and extend out over the split ring to act as a stop in case the ring poops off when airing up the tire - keeps your head attached to your torso that way.
