G502 - WC 50/60 Series trucks

Ok, if you look at the Army Technical Manual TM-9-1808B, page 49, you'll see a picture that shows screws and lock washers on the steering arm. TM-9-808 also states install screws and lock washers when installing the arm. No torque specs, just tighten.

G741 - M37/M42/M43/V41 trucks
If you look at TM-9-8031-2 for the M trucks, top of page 101, install for screws and torque to 60 to 80 lbs.

The reason the M series trucks do not require external lock washers with use of the screws on the steering arm is because the screws are "self-locking" as identified by the "concavity" in the head.

We need to keep in mind that there are differences in these vehicles and when we are working on them we need to use the manual/parts appropriate for the vehicle, or manual/parts when swapping between vehicles. Applying the M repair standards to the WC 50/60 series trucks without the correct M parts, will cause the steering arm on the WC trucks to loosen up. This is probably why we experience problems with these vehicles.

Although I don't recommend you do it, I torqued my screws with external lock washers to 85 foot pounds and I've had no issues with knuckle steering parts working loose.
