Did you find what was causing your issue?
If you did not, check the bolt lengths you are using to secure the top with.
I reassembled a late crash box not paying attention to the bolts. The transmission would "grind" or lock when turning it by hand in low gear. The bolts were just long enough to contact the gear.
If that does not help loosen the bolts slightly, just taking the pressure off and turn the shaft. If the top is binding on the sliders it should free up some with the bolts loose and you will at least know where to look next.

As my dad mentioned below, these transmissions are notoriously noisy and the shift levers wear out. When the lever is worn 3rd gear and 4th gear are not in direct line when shifting. Third will feel like you are reaching for the glove box and fourth is back in to the middle of the cab. Reverse can also be a bit of a challenge, but being stopped tends to help for reverse.

If all else fails they do make nice boat anchors. A first series crash box and certain M37 synchronized transmissions bolt in place.

A bit long, but I hope you find your problem.
John W.S.
