I've used a 4" block like that on 3/8 cable for turns and doubling back for mechanical advantage when pulling with a griphoist. We haven't had a kink problem yet. Well, the long choker on a small log has curled up and doesn't want to straighten out, but that's another story and lesson learned. On another site with other equipment I was helping pull pull with another guy on a gripbox standing on a near vertical slope. We broke the shear pins before anything else did. Sometimes that cable really sings.

The block that can have the top open up without a wrench is the kind you want. Just like your picture.

For tree straps get 6" wide (or bigger) nylon. The 4" may be strong enough but it can still dig into the bark. I've also noticed the stitching really pulled tight. Next time I need to buy I'm going 6" wide.
