Hey Tim, i have been thinking about your question, why would the wheel turn then hop backwards....

The only thing i can think of is that you were still in gear or stuck some where up the line.

Then the wheel would rotate and put pressure on what ever components like the t-case, u-joints, etc. then would hit its limit and the pressure had to be let out so the wheel jumped and you started over with what ever slack was in the gears etc.

I had one t-case that i was certain was in neutral but things were still locked up so i shoved it into what i thought was the gear and all of a sudden things moved free....
i don't know if the linkage was broken or replaced the wrong length or what ever, i sold that truck so i can't tell you for sure.
