yes the spring can be put on backwards and it will cause the reverse effect on the heat valve. Keep soaking it work it a bit at a time and you should be able to get the weight and spring off. I spent a week trying to get mine right. It drove me crazy. Extreme lesson in patients at least for me so I can relate to your state of mind over a simple heat riser valve.
