Being a electrician for over 40 years I have seen just about all forms of wiring done in the last 100 years or so. Knob and Tube was given a bad name because people messed with it the wrong way over the years. That wiring has been in use for a hundred years and still is working as long as you don't over load it. Most people say it does not have a ground wire but how many things in a house uses it anyway that is plugged in. Having wired over 1,000 homes plus I see all kind of problems happening with the new stuff and connection problems burning up in the boxes. Mice can chew on Knob and Tube and not start a fire cause the wires are separated. Romex is a different case if they start chewing on it! Those old screw in fuses always blow at the same rate no mater how old but breakers can go bad with one bad over load and you never know what amps it will trip at next time. Breakers allow big surges before tripping way over there rated use.
