First of all, allow me in advance to apologize for this way off topic question. I just don't know where else I'd find people who would grasp where I'm coming from on it.

To provide some background to it, I've owned a 4x4 since I was 15 years old, and that have been in 1978. I've owned a Dodge 4x4 since 1981, when I traded in my sad 1974 Ford F100 for a 1974 D150. I drove that until I found my 1962 Dodge W300, which I still have, a couple of years later. Right now I have the 62 W300, plus a 1997 D150, and a 1997 Jeep TJ (one of the Chrysler built ones).

So, in short, I've driven a lot of 4x4s and owned quite a few, but they're all of your conventional variety, which I like. I wasn't even too sure about owning a truck or 4x4 that didn't have lock out hubs, although the 97s I own do not.

My wife, on the other hand, been driving an 04 Suburban (off road edition) since it was nearly new. It's now worn out and we looked the other day at a year old Jeep Grand Cherokee, which features Quadra Drive.

I'm not sure what Quadra Drive really is, other than I think it's some sort of 4x4 system that's actually mostly in 2x4 until it determines you need more. I'm not sure if I trust that at all. This vehicle wouldn't be going off road (or certainly not seriously off road), but we get really lousy winter weather with lots of snow and black ice, and I'd prefer to put things in 4x4 myself, rather than have it do it for me when it thinks I need it.

How does this system really work, if anyone knows, and if you do what do you think of it?

Again, sorry for the offtopic query. My suggestion of a 1/2 Dodge truck didn't meet with a positive reception and the alternative is another GM SUV, and I've never really liked the GMs. But the way I look at and have used 4x4s isn't informing my decision here very well, maybe.
