I had always thought that roof seam was actually just a piece of felt or caulk, and an easy repair when the time came. After looking at your pictures I went out and had a closer look at mine. The ends are definitely gone, I'm not sure how far the problem extends though. Didn't dig in too much, as I have enough problems at the moment.
