There's a huge risk for all involved in fighting these fires, and therefore, huge cost, in lives and in money. Mark's comment about the new owner of his water tender being paid almost $2600/day is evidence. Back in the '60s the locals bought new trucks and pump rigs to lease to the forest service for the Sundance fire. Many never were even called out, yet were paid enough money to pay off their investments, just to be available. On the other hand, many lives were lost.
There is no good answer when it comes to forest fires, especially when more and more people are building in forested areas. However, I'll take my chances with a fire any day over living in any city.
