An electric fan makes all the difference for Air Conditioning. Maybe it doesn't matter if you have a belt-driven fan with no clutch, but I found that the thermostatic clutch on my Cummins trucks was rarely engaging because the engine was running cool and didn't require the fan. This was fine for the engine, but the AC condenser was completely ineffective with no air moving over it. An electric fan which comes on with the compressor makes the AC on my crew cab and the Wagoneer the coldest and most reliable AC I've ever experienced. I've also had good success with the parallel flow condenser and R134a. I think the parallel flow condenser is better than the old serpentine style.
