I too always thought that sand blasting didn't require much in the way of protection - it's only sand, right? But a recent article in Custom Planes magazine set me straight. Some of those harmless sand particles shatter when they hit, and become microscopic shards of silica that are light enough to drift in the slightest air currents. Like the one made by your lungs drawing in another breath. Your body has no way of getting rid of them and they accumulate in the tiny pockets in your lungs where oxygen is supposed to cross the thin cell walls to your blood. It's just like your PW's air filter getting all gunked up, except you can't take your lungs out and beat the dust out of 'em or get a new set down at Schuck's. I'm the last to wear a hard hat at an open air construction site or tie off to a roof jack just so I can trip over the rope, but sandblasting protection isn't a case of petty regulations cutting into a workman's productivity. It really is important if you want to keep your wind, which I am about out of now...
