Duo-servo brakes are referred to as self-energizing because as they are applied they increase force using rotation. Think of a trailer tongue draggng along the ground. Duo-servo brakes use two cylinders, two shoes and two anchor points per wheel. The top cylinder actuates the front shoe and the bottom cylinder the rear. The major disadvantage is they do not self-energize in reverse. Modern drum brakes do not have anchors at all and have only one cylinder per wheel. The two brake shoes are joined only at the bottom by the adjuster. The wheel cylinder acts on the top of both brake shoes and no matter the rotation the brake will self-energize. PW brakes had fixed anchor points (manually adjustable for wear) and stepped wheel cylinders so that both shoes exerted equal braking effort. The larger bore of the cylinder goes toward the rear.
